Iowa Department of Transportation Summer Employment/Intern Opportunities
Applications are being accepted until March 3, 2010 for approximately 48 summer jobs completing the statewide Traffic Survey.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. Employment will be from May 24 until mid August with several positions starting early April.
Statewide, overnight travel from Sunday afternoons through Friday mornings is required. The 48 positions represent four different
types of duties:
Manual Counters - study traffic at a different intersection each day, Monday through Thursday. The studies are conducted in three shifts; 6:45am to 9:00am, 10:45am to 1:00pm, and 2:45pm to 6:00pm. An additional 45 minutes is allowed each day to draw a map of the intersection and the surrounding area. Vehicles are provided during the work week. A significant portion of the work will be in the southeastern quadrant of Iowa.
Recorder Operators - expected to travel to defined locations to set the portable traffic recorders and rubber pneumatic tubes, draw recorder location site maps and download the traffic data after the predetermined count time. This requires working in all areas within the road right-of-way, near traffic, and in all weather conditions. Vehicles are provided during the work week. A significant portion of the work will be in the southeastern quadrant of Iowa.
Construction/Shop Workers - assist in installing and maintaining permanent automatic traffic recorders embedded in the pavement and right-of-way. These sites utilize electronic equipment to count and weigh vehicles and are located statewide.
Videolog Assistant - assist in operating a vehicle that collects GPS data and electronic images of the Iowa highway system.
These positions all pay $10.74/hr and employees are reimbursed for eligible incurred expenses for lodging and food. For more information, email Ron Bunting at ronald.bunting@dot.iowa.gov or call (515) 239-1289.
